Fishing Stavanger, Help Please.

Hello, I hope you don't mind me posting on here in English, but I don't speak Norwegian.

Myself and my family will be spending our summer holidays next August, visiting some Norwegian friends who live in Stavanger. We may also be spending some time slightly further North at Hoyviktraedet. As an enthusiastic shore fisherman here in England, I would be very keen to do some fishing whilst we're there. Any information regarding fishing locations, tackle, bait, tides and such, would be very welcome. I will have access to a car, and plan to take my own tackle with me, but this may need to be supplemented with local supplies.

Most of the fishing I do here, involves casting a 150 - 175g weight, with worm, crab, squid or fish baits, up to 130m from the shore, often in darkness. I can post some pictures of the tackle, and some of the fish I've caught, if it helps. From the little I know about Norwegian fishing, it seems like you use more lures and artificial baits than we do, and fish into much deeper water?

I would be very grateful for any help at all, and I will try to learn at least a few words of Norwegian before the summer!

Bring your UK beachcasters! We now use 4-8 oz English or Japanese rods with multipliers or fixed spools, 120-200g grip leads and beach bombs, usually 2 hook clipped up for small baits and pulleys for big baits, mackerel, prawns and lugworms for bait. We fish deeper, but since the currents are not as strong here it is quite similar to UK conditions.

The local tackle stores in Stavanger will probably not be able to supply you gear and tackle for shore fishing. Some lead and sliders and unknown beachcasters at best, but not the amount and selection as in the UK. Mostly lures and tackle for trout and cod.

A local tackle shop in Haugesund will serve you a lot better. Check them in advance on www.baardsen.no.

And if you need a local guide (for free of course), me and my fishing buddies will allways do an effort to show you what norwegian shore and coast fishing can offer. Please let us now what you are fishing for, species, specimen or size. We fish from shores, cliffs, in small size harbors, at day and night, from small boats and in the deep fjords. We stock most of the rig building gear from i.e. veals and may also supply you with the essential bits and pieces when in need.

As ThorEH said, a few hours driving up north may give you a chance at the larger species and fishes, both from cliffs and fjords. I am sure that whereever youre staying or fishing, we'll put you in contact with someone who can be a guide for you and your familiy. Let us know in advance, and there might be a fishing tour set up for you.

And bring clothes for rainy and windy weather if staying in Stavanger

Western Norway fishing is just same same but better fella, easier access to deeper water... none of that east coast english sand same gear used too, no voodoo involved. Worth bringing a fly and lure rod to fill the gaps too... plenty of seatrout here and 100% legal

like mentioned earlier, Baardsen up this way is the place to buy gear if you need something.

Thank you everyone for your advice and offers of help. Some nice fish pictures too, very encouraging. I'm really excited about the fishing opportunities now!

I still intend to post pictures of some of my rigs, to make sure they are appropriate for Norwegian waters, but they're surprisingly difficult to photograph clearly. I will persevere though, and will display something in due course.

You're so lucky to have such a fantastic coastline to fish from, and the fish to go with it, I'm jealous!

By the sound of it, I should be able to bring all the tackle I need, but It is useful to know where to go for items I may forget, or to replace gear lost in heavy ground etc. I make my own grip leads, and will bring as many as possible. I'll bring a lure rod and some spinners, shads etc too, but I guess that lure fishing is something else that I need to research too. Interesting that you mention Veals, they're very highly regarded here, for reliability and service. I didn't know they were known internationally too.

I'll stay in touch (with more questions, no doubt!), and may even meet some of you in the summer!

These will give you some idea of how we fish over here.

As you can see, most of the fishing is done from the shore (in the Solent, between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight) and mostly at night, although occasionally from a boat, or in the River Thames at Oxford.

After a spending a week or so with friends in Stavanger, we will be staying here from August 18th to August 25th.

Is anyone familiar with this area? We will have access to a small boat too. I don't mind driving a bit, if it means finding some better fish, but I suspect that even average fishing (by your standards) will be much better than what we are used to here.

The map link you posted is one our best spots / areas for fishing outside Stavanger. Matz in this forum is known to that area if i aint mistaken, and Karleif has also tried fishing there with some success. A boat and depth chart for that area will certanly give you an advantage, but also shore angling / beach casting will produce great results.

Impressive sharks in your album, they do not get quite that big in our region.

I will try to join yoy for a trip if u like, but the distance between Stavanger and that particular area will limit my guiding potensial. We are going to try a couple of trips up there before you arrive, maybe we'll be of more use then.

Here is my fisrt posting in Norwegian. I hope you can understand me.

Where are the good fishing places near and around Sandsfjorden in August? I will be in Høyviktrædet from August 18 to 25, on holiday with the family. I would like to fish for cod, coley, plaice, mackeral etc, night or day time.

Also, we will be in Hinna, near Stavanger from August 12 to 18, with friends. Where are the good fishing places around there?

I will have access to a small boat whilst in Høyviktrædet, and may be able to borrow a fish finder from a friend here in England. If anyone is local to these areas, I would welcome some company whilst fishing.

As you can see, I have been trying to learn some Norwegian from a book and CD, but I am struggling to find fishing related vocabulary. Perhaps someone on here could help me with a few words? for instance, what are the words for?

bait, hook, fishing rod, reel, lugworm, ragworm, sqid, lure, line, crab, weight, swivel, shore, rocks, sand, mud, weed.
